The Netherlands have taken advantage of the EU Presidency to initiate discussion, via a series of conferences, about the principles that underpin the European Union, the values the EU represents and what these values mean for the citizens of Europe. The Presidency hopes that the exchange of ideas between the participants in this conference will stimulate new ideas and their possible translation into policy. Active European citizenship is one of the keywords. On 7 September, the first of a series of conferences entitled ‘The Politics of Europe’ was held. In the months since then, prominent intellectuals, scientists, historians, politicians, philosophers, writers, diplomats, policy-makers, opinion-formers and businessmen have delved into the questions of what Europe stands for, what it means to be European and how Europeans should respond to challenges of today, at the series of conferences organised by the Nexus Institute in the framework of the European Presidency. The final conference, ‘Europe. A beautiful idea?’, took place on 4 December in Rotterdam.
