Since 1 May 2004, the European Union has had 25 Member States. We need each other in many ways. We can only build a strong economy with enough jobs through an EU-wide effort. And only by working together can we make our living environment safer.

As one of the EU’s founding countries, the Netherlands knows that European cooperation has achieved much in a half century. But the biggest challenges still lie before us. As holder of the Presidency in the second half of 2004, the Netherlands will work hard to promote further cooperation in building Europe’s future.
